The rocky logging roads of western Maine represent
homecoming for a great number of northeastern rally teams.
The Maine Forest Rally is based at the Sunday River Ski
Resort and features car breaking gravel roads. John Buffum,
the most accomplished American rally driver in the sport's
long history, helps put this event together.
LOCATION | Rumford,
Maine & Bethel, Maine
This rally is based at a winter ski resort, but come
summertime the roads in the area are crowded with sliding
rally cars. The race snakes through vast areas of land
owned by lumber or paper companies. These roads are active
logging roads, and when the rally is not in town they
are used daily by 18 wheeler logging trucks. Don't miss
the spectator area at the Mexico Rec Park. It's a short
stage that runs through the town's recreation park --
around the backstop of the baseball field and past the
playground!
CONDITIONS | Rough gravel, rocks, warm
Expect fun in the sun if you're a spectator. For
drivers, however, the heat, dust, and rocky roads represent
a unique challenge. Road conditions are fast, and hitting
stray rocks on the edge of the road ends things abruptly
for many drivers. Bring your sunscreen and your mountain
bike, as summertime in Maine is an outdoor enthusiast's
dream come true.
