Rally Slide  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
When you DNF on day one of Rally Oregon, you would assume you're done sliding till the next rally.

This is not the case with Matt Johnson. From rental cars to rally cars sliding is his specialty. As seen here Matt and friends constructed the "rally slip-and-slide" to help spice up the service area. They even made an event out of it with longest slide, freestyle, and two-man race. In Matt's words, "I'm out of the rally, but I'm not outta ideas."

Seen at left with Travis Pastrana.

Two Wheel Drive Updates  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
Stage twelve was a fast one for sixteen year-old Van Way, putting over twenty seconds on second place two wheel drive competitor car 56 Szewczyk/Karzyns. Unfortunately about halfway through stage twelve the car started to lose brakes, perhaps helping his time, according to co-driver Slocum.
The gap between first and second is just over forty-five seconds and both teams seem happy not to push and jeopardize a spot on the podium.

Conley Maintains Position in SP  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
SP car 477 Conley/Herlache currently sit third in class. However the team had a "moment" on stage twelve, bending a rear control arm and damaging an axel. The mishap cost the team around thirty seconds over forth place competitor car 224 Mager/Dumaoal who now sit approximately forty-five seconds behind.

ACP Falls to Forth Pastrana Leads  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
Car 199 Pastrana/Edstrom wins stage 12 by a second over car 34 Foust/Beavis, only to have Foust take back the second lost on the following stage.
Foust and Pastrana are currently seperated by about forty-five seconds. Car 176 Mancin/Wislawski took it easy on the first stage, happy to start a bit slow rather than risk an off.
By stage two they were up to full speed, winning by over three seconds. Mancin now sits in third and reports he will be pushing for the rest of the rally.
While Mancin moved up, car 20 Comire-Picard/Durant found themselves without rear brakes halfway through stage one. The team was able to partially fix the problem in between stages. However they still couldn't push 100% and gave up a position to Mancin. Car 20 will also be pushing hard after service to make up time lost in the hopes of getting on the podium.

Eklund Out  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
Car 233 Eklund/Price are out of the rally after stage 12 with a bent control arm and other suspension components on the rear of the car.
Despite a valiant effort from the crew, and parts from Pat Moro the team has decided to sideline their efforts and join the long list of
SP competitors turned spectators. Paul and team would like to thank the organizers, Subaru Northwest and, Nate, Greg, Ian, and James.

Old Beats New  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
The oldest car in the field, a 1969 Saab 96 driven by Garth Ankeny and co-driver Russ Kraushaar, is having a great rally. The team won Group two in the regional yesterday beating cars thiry years newer. "You don't ditch hook here much," said Ankeny. Aside from fixing the exhaust the old Saab has been trouble free, in part because the team is careful to stay away from the big rocks that occasionally are put in the road by passing cars. "We are having a great time and enjoy people's reaction to our car."

Day Three Begins  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
The third and last day of the Oregon Trail Rally has begun. Today's stages total around forty miles and are re-run on many of the same stages as yesterday, this time in reverse direction.

With many teams going off or having mechanical issues, the field is a few cars smaller. However, some teams who were able to fix their cars over night have decided to re enter to gain some valuable seat time. Car 43 Block/Gelsomino are back in as are car 233 Eklund/Price and car 54 Fox/Blattner.

More News From Yesterday  - Sunday, May 17, 2009
Car 233 Eklund/Price are claiming "unconditional co-driver error, late call on the same right 3 that Pat Moro missed on stage seven. We would like to thank Subaru North West, and Surgeline Tuning, It was all good until.."
The team was breifly in second place in SP when they went out on stage ten. If the crew can get the car fixed they will be returning to regional competition, in hopes of gaining more seat time.

Open Class Updates  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Most of the drama today has taken place out of the top five, but a battle still rages in open class.
Pastrana/Edstrom in car 199 set the pace on the last three stages, wining all of them. Car 34 Foust/Beavis stayed close and finished the day less than a minute behind.
Car 20 Comrie-Picard/Durant started the afternoon with a punctured tire on the stage nine that led to a high speed spin costing the team almost a minute. They were able to get the car pointed in the right direction and were back on pace for the final two stages coming within four tenths of a second from a stage win on the last stage.
In a rally where attrition has played a leading role, tomorrow promises to have some great battles in the respective classes.

Mirra in a League of His Own  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Car 40 Mirra/Ringer has driven a smart rally all day long. That is not to say it was without incident with a puncture on stage nine and a few close calls in the closing stages. Mirra now sits first in SP leading car #418 Keeney/Keeney by six and a half minutes.

Today’s attrition rate has been nothing close of spectacular for the SP class. In the closing stages we saw car #233 Eklund/Price have an off on stage 10 causing suspension issues that forced them to retire, followed by Wolfe/Hoche-Mong with unknown issues.
Currently there are only 4 cars left in the class guaranteeing all who finish a piece of the contingency money put up by Subaru of America.

Two Wheel Drive Results  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Two wheel drive results after stage 11:
Car 600 Van Way/Slocum 1:10:27.4
Car 56 Szewczyk/Karzyns 1:10:58.7
Car 155 Conley/Rudolf 1:15:38.

Van Way/Slocum have been putting on a solid performance all rally and will be a hard team to beat if they can keep their composure.

Szewczyk/Karzyns are happy to be in second after day two. The team had some small problems today and feel that some time was lost. It should also be noted that they are also the crew for their car and have been taking care of any issues that arise. “Stage 11 was the best stage so far,” said Szewczyk. “We are having a lot of fun, and you never know, if we are close to Van Way we might just push a bit more tomorrow to try to catch up.”

Conley/Rudolf Are trying to make up time lost on Friday when they broke an axel. The spare on the car is not as strong so they are playing it safe and not taking chances.

Wiktorczyk Off on Stage Ten  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Car 61 Wiktorczyk/Dorman are being reported as off on stage ten. If they are unable to continue, Dave Mirra will take the lead in SP by default.

More Action in Super Production  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Car 61 Wiktorczyk/Dorman move into first in SP. The battle continues in SP with Mirra and Wiktorczyk. Despite feeling like he was off the pace on stage 7, Mirra was able to hang on for the win by a margin of almost fifteen seconds. He then lost about twenty to Wiktorczyk after a spin on stage eight. Wiktorczyk's car started to overheat towards the end of stage 8, in addition to getting a flat tire; the team was still able to win the stage.

Moro Goes Off  - Saturday, May 16, 2009

Mancin Happy With his Position  - Saturday, May 16, 2009

Foust Drops to Third  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Car 34 Foust/Beavis have dropped to third overall losing small amounts of time on stages five and six. They also stalled at the start on eight losing about ten seconds to current leader Pastrana in car 199.

Car 199 Pastrana/Edstrom have just started stage 8. As of stage 6 they hold a slim lead over car 20 Comire-Picard/Durant. We will have more to report as cars come in.

Van Way continues to impress  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
The youngest driver currently competing in the Rally America National Championship is leading the 2wd class after stage 5.

Car 33 Austin/Angell are also reported out with mechanical issues.

Block out After Stage 6  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
The team of Car 43 Block/Gelsomino have reported a broken control arm on stage 6 after hitting a rock. The team was able to make it to the finish of 6 where their crew will meet them and get the car back to service. This does unfortunately mean that they are out of the event.

Battle Heats up in Super Production  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
With the top 3 cars separated by less than four seconds, car 40 Mirra/Ringer lead by a tenth of a second over second place competitor car 61 Wiktorczyk/Dorman.

They are followed by car 59 Moro/Crouch, only 3 seconds back from the leader.

Car 523 Hanson/Hanson sits in forth, still a bit off the pace, trying to make up a deficit incurred on yesterday's Super Special.

 - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Car 178 Morley/VonProtzeller were reported off on stage 1. The team took approximately 45 minutes recovering the car. Unfortunately they were too late to continue. However, they may try to repair the car and run for fun on the last three stages today.

They will be back in the Regional rally tomorrow contesting Group 2 in their vintage Saab.

 - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Why read about it when you can experience the rally in person! As we know Matt Johnson DNF’d after day one. To make the most of his weekend in beautiful Oregon he and EXPN.com’s Bill Lockwood have decided to throw a little party. Ok so it’s more of a fiesta of sorts, a hotdog fiesta. Bill and Matt are on their way to the Mosier spectator area/stage 7 to grill hotdogs and raffle off a Subaru Rally Team USA t-shirt. The duo will be hard to miss as they will do the grilling out of the back of Bill’s 2010 Magenta colored Ford Fiesta.

Pastrana Leads After Stage 5  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Cars are starting to come back to service after running a 5-mile stage. The teams will have a 30 minute service, then head back out for stages 6-8.

Car 199 Pastrana/Edstrom were 2nd on the first stage and currently lead by about 3 seconds over car 34 Foust/Beavis.
Car 43 Block/Gelsomino won the first stage and are enjoying themselves. “It is nice to see some new roads” said Block. The team is currently in 3rd and about 6 seconds out of the lead.

Day Two Begins  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
With temps forecasted in the mid 80’s, the 2nd day of the Oregon Trail Rally promises to be a hot one. After Friday’s Super Special Stages at Portland International Raceway the rally moves east to Hood River, OR. Today’s stages are run on gravel logging roads in the area, and totaling over 60 stage miles it’s all about making it to the finish.

Check back for more updates after the cars leave Parc Expose for stage 5 just after 11AM PST.

Day One Carnage  - Saturday, May 16, 2009
Day one went smooth for most teams however the rally was over almost before it began for car #41 Tuglu/Wilburn. The team went off into a rock just into stage one, doing heavy damage to the front corner and suspension. The crew was hard at work fixing the car and plans to run the rest of the rally starting tomorrow.

Cars #46 Johnson/Wimpey had motor problems and were unable to continue after finishing stage 2.
It appears as though the problems are terminal and the team is out for the rest of the rally.

Car #523 Hanson/Hanson had a minor collision with a fence and were able to continue.
The team is currently 7th in SP and hopes to improve on their position when the rally turns back to all gravel stages tomorrow.

Hot Start for Matt Johnson  - Friday, May 15, 2009
Regular front-runner in the SP class, Matthew Johnson blew his turbo charger on stage 1, spraying hot oil all over the engine bay, resulting in a fire. The team is ok and looks as if they will continue. However, they currently sit 14th overall and 5th in SP.

The gamble pays off  - Friday, May 15, 2009
Two stages are in the books and it looks like the tarmac tire choice of car #34 Tanner Foust has paid off.

Foust is currently leading by almost 3 seconds over car #199 Travis Pastrana, also on tarmac tires.

The cars are all in for a short service and the crews are attaching lights for the final two stages.

Dillon Van Way starts his 5th  - Friday, May 15, 2009
The youngest driver in the Rally America Championship also happens to be leading the 2wd class. This being only his 5th rally and first with new co-driver Ben $locum, the team plans to take it slow at first. “We are just going to focus on driving tonight’s stages for now,” said Dillon. “I have never raced on tarmac and don’t need to break the car.” Smart words coming from a kid who just got his license this past year.

ACP ready to rally  - Friday, May 15, 2009
NOS Energy Drink driver Andrew Comrie-Picard (ACP) and co-driver Robbie Durant are happy just to be actually “rallying” today.

It’s been a bit of a long week with the team having suspension issues on Wednesday and a slight off on the press stage yesterday adding more to the crew’s to-do list. “We have had a lot of drama before the rally and are happy just to start today ready to go. The crew deserves a big thanks,” said Robbie Durant.

And that’s a good thing as ACP currently has a slight lead in the national points over Tanner Foust.
