Scott Rains Wins 2009 Year End Photo Contest

Monday, February  8, 2010
At the end of the 2009 Rally America Championship season, DC Shoes came on board to provide the prizes for a year-end photo contest. Four winners after four weeks were selected by fans and a panel of judges to compete for the grand prize comprising of a complete DC Shoes automotive clothing package.

Rounding out the four weekly winners, Kenneth Tsang from Ann Arbor, MI, advanced to the grand prize round. Tsang took his winning photograph from the inside corner of the super special at the 2009 Sno*Drift Rally. He was participating in the snow RallCross between superspecials to gain his unique position.

The judging panel selected Scott Rains from Sturgis, MI as the grand prize winner just prior to the Sno*Drift Rally season opener.

Scott is no stranger to Rally America’s photo contests when he won the 2009 Rally in the 100 Acre Wood contest after amazing circumstances brought him to the event.

Prior to winning the 100 Acre Wood contest, Rain’s story began with finding a competitor’s rear bumper on a Sno*Drift Rally stage.

Rain happened upon the bumper when leaving a stage and wondered who it could belong to. After some Internet searching, he found a video of Andrew Comrie-Picard missing his brightly colored bumper and he called the team. Andrew said they would like the bumper back but did not have a way of retrieving it. So they asked Rain if he could bring it to the 100 Acre Wood Rally and in return they would give him a rally car ride at the testing stage.

Rain jumped at the chance. He took some time off work, arrived at the rally to give back the bumper, and got the ride of his lifetime. Afterwards, Rain was allowed on the testing stage where he captured his winning photo contest shot.

“I remembered this bump on the practice stage when I was in the car,” explained Rain. “I went back there and was able to take a series of shots and see what it looked like when I was jumping off that spot.”

Rain’s photograph for this contest is again of Andrew Comrie-Picard from that practice stage. However, this picture is from a different angle than his previous contest submissions:

“Usually I am even with the car or slightly below eyesight, but I found a downhill section of the stage and was able to capture a top down view of ACP.”

Congratulations, Scott, for winning the DC Shoes grand prize and thank you to everyone who participated in the Year End contest. Rally America and fans saw many great photographs and the judging panel had a difficult time selecting each weekly winner.
