Local Lewiston, MI Business Keeps Grassroots Team Running in the Sno*Drift Rally
The Sno*Drift Rally has been operating in Montmorency County and the cities of Lewiston, Atlanta and Hillman for 47 years and the community has consistently embraced the large migration of rally people every year.
For rally teams and their crews the community’s open arms has produce countless stories left unheard of local businesses and residents selflessly opening their homes and offering services to teams on their quest to win the notoriously difficult Sno*Drift Rally.
One such story occurred with the regional Open Class entry of Erik Zenz from West Allis, WI and co-driver Dave Parps from Mequon, WI in their turbocharged Mazda 323 GTX. The team has been a long term Sno*Drift entry and was looking forward to racing in the much improved Sno*Drift road conditions.
The first day of Sno*Drift ran beautifully, but on their return to service the team heard a disturbing clunking in the rear that grew louder and stronger causing Zenz and Parps to wonder if their event was coming to an end. The team gingerly limped into the Lewiston final control zone when their crew discovered that a mounting bracket weld on their differential had broken. Without this bracket the team would be unable to continue and disappointment quickly set in.
At close to midnight the team spotted a Twin Lakes Auto Repair & 24 Hour Towing advertisement in the Sno*Drift Rally spectator guide. Despite the late hour the team desperately called the phone number and hoped for the best. Twin Lakes answered the call and went beyond the call of duty by reopening the shop for the team to use the car lift and welding equipment away from the freezing temperatures. A Twin Lakes employee offered his own expertise to speed up the process, and Zenz and Parps reentered the Sno*Drift Rally on the second day at 7:00am to finish third overall in the Drift Regional Rally!
"I would like to thank Twin Lakes Auto in Lewiston for opening its doors on Friday night to allow us the use of their welding equipment and facility to get my car fixed and complete in time for the Drift Rally on Saturday,” said Zenz, “The owner was so happy to help that we wanted to return to the favor by placing their logo on our car.”
Twin Lakes Auto Repair & 24 Hour Towing is just one of many examples of the importance of community in the sport of rally racing and for the grassroots competitor. When you are in Lewiston with automotive needs please remember www.twinlakesautorepair.com
