Some vehicles never go out of style in the Rally America National Championship, whether they’re competing in the top-level Open class or one of the pair of 2WD classes on offer in regional events. Siblings Daniel and Dustin Yarborough have proven that with their 1987 Volkswagen Golf, running in Group 2 spec under the Battle Turtle Rally Team banner.

While the car is no stranger to the stages, its newest owners have high hopes for plenty of decent finishes as they develop into more experienced competitors. Today, Daniel gives us a little bit of background on the Battle Turtle machine, including its nickname and some of its upgrades:

When did you pick up this car and where did you get it?

We got the car in January 2017. We got the car from Ozgur Simsek.

Any nicknames for the car?

Dirt Muffin.

Why was this the right car for you to use in Rally America?

It’s affordable and easy to service.

Aside from safety regulations, what have you done to improve its performance?

We added a Weber carb in favor of the stock CIS system, header, exhaust, upgraded suspension, and a close ratio gearbox with a locking diff.

When it’s not rallying, where’s the home base for this car?

Greensboro, North Carolina.

When was your first event with this car and how did you do?

Sandblast Rally in 2017. We DNFed.

Has anybody else rallied this car over the years?

Yes, Ozgur Simsek ran the car for a few years.
