DIRT / Jackson Rally Takes 1st at Rally Colorado’s Middle Cog 1 and 2

The DirtyImpreza.com Rally Team (DIRT) / Jackson Rally crew made their way up to the high altitude stages of Rally Colorado’s two regional events Middle Cog 1 and 2 at the end of September. It was here, on the picturesque forest stages, where driver Keith Jackson and co-driver Marra Estep would put their skills to the test during their first Rally America appearance. The roads were very fast and at times quite rocky. Rough conditions can cause mechanical problems to appear much quicker than on smooth stages, but the Subaru STi performed flawlessly and required no major work or repairs during any of the designated service intervals.

“We changed an air filter and that was it” remarked crew chief Kyle Jackson. Extensive preparation work before the event was a contributing factor to the team’s success. “It’s not all me.” Kyle continues. “Keith works all day and then comes down to the shop to work all night going over the entire car. We have a very extensive checklist that we go over before an event and at every service.”

The fast sections were taken flat out, and it was here where Keith mentioned that the car wasn’t fast enough, possibly due to the car’s ECU having been tuned at near sea level back home in California. It was undoubtedly down on power, but the roads were still nothing short of intense. When asked about what it was like to run in the same rally as the top national level competitors Keith commented:

“It’s pretty exciting at first just to be there with those guys, but then you realize that they’re doing the exact same thing you are… just racing.”

Keith’s aggressive but smooth driving style combined with Marra’s pace note delivery was enough to keep them in the number on spot by the end of the final stage. Rally Colorado was a very big win for DIRT / Jackson Rally, and we are looking forward to competing in future Rally America events in 2010.
