Have you heard about the Quaker State oil products? If yes, you might have thought the company behind it is the name itself. However, that’s not the case, as this brand has a long history. In fact, it’s one of the oldest brands in the business of manufacturing oil.

So, who makes Quaker State oil? Although founded by Phinny Brothers Oil Co., the company was bought by Eastern Refining Co. in 1924. Then, in 1998, Pennzoil acquired the brand name. However, four years later, Shell bought the right to Quaker State and has been running the business even until today.

Read on to find out more about who owns Quaker State and whether it’s a good brand.

Who Manufactures Quaker State Oil

Phinny Brothers Oil Co (1919 – 1924)

The history of Quaker State oil began in 1912 with the brand name of Quaker State Oil Refining. Founded by Phinny Brothers Oil Co in the Oil City of Pennsylvania, this oil company captured many customers with its high-quality products and advertisements in the newspapers.

Eastern Refining Co. (1924 – 1998)

In 1924, Eastern Refining Co. acquired the brand name and took the reins from there. In 1931, they furthered their reputation by joining with 18 companies, which lengthened their reach in the automotive industry in the USA.

The company’s growth was shown throughout the country, and the brand name changed to Quaker State Corporation.

Pennzoil (1998 – 2002)

Since 1992, the brand’s sales dropped, affecting the company’s performance. Its competitor, Pennzoil, bought the corporation in 1998, which led to the name change of Pennzoil – Quaker State Company.

However, the business still suffered tremendously due to the change in the formula of oil by Pennzoil.

Shell (2002 – Now)

In 2002, Shell, another famous company in the petroleum business, bought Pennzoil-Quaker State Co. It continued producing Quaker State motor oil and synthetic oil with its own formulas in Texas, which is also where its headquarters are based.

Is Quaker State a Good Oil

Yes, Quaker State oil is certainly of high quality. Currently manufactured using Shell’s formulation, Quaker State oils qualify to the standard implied for all oil products today (e.g., API, ILSAC, etc.).

What’s more, the oil products from Shell offer the following qualities for reliable usage.

  • Anti-wear – The brand’s motor oil prevents wear and tear that can affect the engine’s performance.
  • Prevents sludge – Debris in engine oils will affect lubrication flow; Quaker Oil formulation will ensure it will be lessened.
  • High temperature resistance – Can work at high temperatures, which is essential for daily driving.

Even better, the brand also offers several products so that you can find one that can cater to your needs.

Full synthetic oil

  • Quaker State Full Synthetic Oil
  • Quaker State High Mileage Full Synthetic
  • Quaker State Euro Full Synthetic
  • Quaker State Ultimate Protection Full

Conventional motor oil

  • Quaker State Motor Oil
  • Quaker State High Mileage Motor Oil
  • Quaker State All Mileage Motor Oil
  • Transmission Fluid
  • 2-stroke Engine Oil

Despite the ups and downs that the brand went through, the challenges only helped the product improve. With Shell, the company who makes Quaker State oil today, the previous difficulties made the brand more prominent and reliable.

Such qualities mentioned are must-haves for every vehicle owner. Quaker State’s long history in the business proves that its products in the automotive world are here for a reason – it’s to be a performing brand that every vehicle needs.
